Research abstract

The main objective will be to optimize the environmentally compliant, waterborne primers that were developed and tested during the Phase I program. Phase II research will further optimize and improve the performance of a single component, zero volatile organic compounds (VOC's), chemical agent resistant primer for the exterior surfaces of U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) land and amphibious equipment. UDC will also evaluate the developed primer system as a single coat system that will replace the currently used combination of a primer followed by a topcoat. UDC's single component system will have excellent adhesion to aluminum and steel, provide corrosion and chemical agent resistance and show good performance in other properties such as abrasion resistance and weatherability. There will not be any need for topcoat. This will reduce time and labor in both shop and field application. A large number of formulations will be tested by UDC in accordance with standard exterior primer specifications (i.e., MIL-P-53022 and MIL-P-53030) used by the U.S. Marine Corps. Additional testing in accordance with topcoat military specifications such as MIL-C-53039 will be performed. The resultant performance will be verified by an independent test facility. UDC will provide materials and application specifications for the primers and coatings. At the end of Phase II, UDC will provide a detailed report that will include all work performed, resultant data, specifications and a Phase III production plan.
