Research abstract

Based on work performed in the Phase I SBIR "Optical Network Devices and Protocols for Space", we propose an effort to develop and demonstrate critical elements for future broadband space-based optical communications networks. This proposal provides background, identifies requirements, and proposes solutions for design elements critical to the successful deployment of these future satellite networks. The solutions are consistent with the objectives of the DoD Transformational Communications Strategy, supporting a path towards a converged satellite communications infrastructure. The Saraswati approach provides: A space-based optical backbone network architecture that provides high reliability high-speed transport of multi-protocol traffic streams. An innovative design for a family of satellite communications interface modules that enables seamless access to the backbone network for all existing protocols. The interfaces will allow routing and processing of SONET signals, IP and ATM packet data, and even legacy payload asynchronous digital and analog data. Platforms can be new and legacy satellites, aircraft and UAVs. A flexible satellite communications switch. The switch will be comprised of switch fabric modules which can be utilized to have a total capacity of greater than 320GB/s The design uses COTS components and allows efficient bandwidth management at rates ranging from kilobits to gigabits.
