Research abstract

The evolution of high performance COTS, combined with continued growth of weapon system and combat system requirements, provides an opportunity to design an architecture more capable of exploiting new technologies than the legacy architecture that has been developed for over two decades. The need for evolution toward an open architecture is motivated by both performance and supportability considerations. The primary motivation for open architecture is the easy and cost-effective integration of new capability into the system through well-defined interfaces and open standards.System requirements may include not only capability and performance goals but also non-functional engineering goals. In addition to traditional metrics such as reliability and survivability, these metrics include qualitative goals such as portability, scalability, extensibility, and flexibility of use. These goals will be met by careful design, isolation layers where appropriate, through use of open systems principles and standards.
