Research abstract

Bulk fuel desulfurization is required to apply fuel cells to a new class of naval vessels. Altex, a small business entity, and Pennsylvania State University (PSU), a research organization, have teamed up under a Phase I STTR program and have shown the feasibility of the innovative Logistic Fuel Sulfur Removal (LFSR) system. The LFSR removes the fuel sulfur from Navy fuels without detrimental impacts on fuel properties and disposes the sulfur into seawater in an environmentally safe manner. Using test data, an LFSR system was designed for desulfurizing 500 BBL/ day of NATO-F76 fuel. During the proposed Phase II program, the LFSR system will be further refined for navy applications, and a lab-scale and a subscale unit will be fabricated and tested under the Phase II baseline and Option programs. This demonstration will provide the basis for designing and integrating the LFSR into new Navy vessels.
