Research abstract

The disposal of low observable composite (LOC) wastes generated during the production and maintenence of Air Force aircraft is made difficult because LOC wastes contain potentially classified information about the LOC materials, formulations, and/or low observable properties. This prevents the ready disposal of these wastes by normal means of solid waste disposal, such as landfilling. This proposal will investigate a novel pyrolysis process for destroying the classified value of LOCs. The solid pyrolysis products from this process should be suitable for solid waste disposal or possible recycling/reuse. If this process is proven feasible at the bench scale, a prototype processing machine will be constructed and tested during Phase 2 of this project.
