Research abstract

Currently, the structural material of choice for jet fighter canopies is polycarbonate (PC) as it is transparent, lightweight, and has exceptional toughness and impact resistance properties. However, in order to increase the maximum velocities of fighter jets, the next generation of jet canopies must be able to operate at higher temperature than can be achieved with PC, which is limited to 150°C. A method of improving the glass transition temperature of PC materials is to form a copolymer with poly oligosilsesquioxane (POSS). PC-POSS copolymers offer a chance to significantly improve the thermal and mechanical capabilities of an optically transparent polymer over neat PC. In this Phase I effort, Foster Miller will team with subcontractor Prof. Pat Mather of the University of Connecticut to make and test novel PC-POSS copolymers. Our commercial teaming partner, Sierracin Corporation, will provide guidance in canopy material requirements. (P-040189)
