Research abstract

More and more dependence is being placed on integrating the live, virtual, and constructive environments in order for the 21st century warfighter to hone warfighting skills just before their employment. There is an expanding need for the warfighter to be able to maintain those skills while deployed in theater. The dependence is demanding more resources in people, material, and time to plan, prepare, and execute the Distributed Mission Operations environment. The rapidly changing nature of warfare in the 21st century is overtaxing stove-piped systems than now must integrate both horizontally and vertically in a cost-effective manner. Robust Exercise and Training Operational Environment (RETROE) proposes to reduce the resources needed to design, plan, and execute live, virtual, and constructive events by allowing geographically-separated people, models, and simulations to come together to operate within a synthetic battlespace environment. RETROE will enable Air Force air and space assets to be integrated in order understand the military effects these assets bring to the operation. Additionally, being able to operate within the Joint and Coalition environment will be addressed. RETROE will operate within an enterprise to facilitate collaboration between distributed assets using collaborative technologies, intelligent agents, human-computer interface technologies, knowledge-management, and other emerging technologies.
