Research abstract
Physical Sciences Inc (PSI) proposes the development of a gigahertz lidar imaging receiver (GLIMR) for deployment from small unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) in support of mine detection, docking and infrastructure inspection applications. GLIMR employs a compressive sensing architecture leveraging balanced detection to achieve faster update rates, reduced data volume and backscatter suppression. This capability is provided with size, weight and power consumption consistent with the anticipated UUV platforms. Under the Phase I effort, the feasibility of the proposed approach achieving sufficient resolution in all spatial dimensions to detect targets of interest in cluttered environments was demonstrated. Under the Phase II effort, this capability will be driven to practice through the design, build, and test of a series of prototypes. The resulting sensor performance will be demonstrated and refined through a series of tests over a range of water turbidities and platform motion profiles. Finally, the system will be repackaged for ease of integration with an initial transition platform in advance of at sea trials.
