Research abstract
The purpose of the proposed Phase II research is to develop a prototype of the TFLAMES core software model. This model and attendant sub-routines will make it possible to calculate the stress and life of each individual engine component using actual flight data in near-real time, replacing the current method of using analysis of generic missions and bookkeeping Total Accumulated Cycles (TAC). In addition it will be a compliment to - even an essential component of - condition monitoring and condition based maintenance systems. With future modifications it will permit us to accurately predict component life remaining once life issues such as crack initiations are detected. Completion of this new and innovative approach will help operational forces meet the Air Force's goal of extending time on wing for turbine engine rotating components and reduce life-cycle costs while assuring the safety of air crew and enhancing mission readiness. It will facilitate condition based maintenance made possible by prognostics type logistical tools. Furthermore, when field conditions call for enhanced performance of turbine engines beyond rated power, life impact analysis data will be available nearly real-time to show true impact on component life and mission readiness.
