Research abstract

Progress has been made in the modeling and analysis of the single aircraft shipboard landing task. However, limitations exist in current simulations where the analysis does not include the interference arising from simultaneous operation of multiple aircraft on the same ship. To enhance the modeling and simulation of aircraft shipboard operations, especially in the case of flight safety, the interaction between the ship and the aircraft, as well as between multiple aircraft, must be addressed. Phase I of this SBIR successfully accomplished the proof of concept and prototype development of an advanced multi-aircraft shipboard landing model using both advanced finite state dynamic wake and time accurate vortex wake models to support multi-aircraft shipboard launch and recovery analysis. The goal of Phase II is to fully implement the Phase I formulation and prototype into a comprehensive modeling and simulation program and to provide users with an advanced engineering modeling tool in support of practical shipboard aircraft operation analysis. The detailed technical objectives of the Phase II efforts are to (1) develop advanced and practically applicable modeling and simulation tools for multi-aircraft aerodynamic interaction under the shipboard operational environment; (2) validate the advanced modeling and simulation tools for available wind tunnel and full scale measured data; (3) apply the advanced multi-aircraft modeling and simulation tool to support Naval aircraft shipboard landing operations.
