Research abstract
This proposal is directed at the development of a non-magnetic rechargeable battery for moderate rate discharge in mine warfare systems. After a review of alternative battery chemistries and packaging approaches, it is proposed to concentrate the analysis and development on flat wafer cells and stacks of the lithium ion chemistry. Alternative cathode electrode materials will be evaluated to select a material that is compatible with the non-magnetic and electrical performance requirements of batteries for mine applications. Individual wafer test cells of a nominal capacity of up to 5 Ah will be fabricated and tested to evaluate their characteristic to be compatible with a battery of 160 to 260 Watt hours stored energy, five pound weight, a size of 9.5" x 4" x 3.25" and a cycle life of 300-2000 cycles and be able to operate at depths of 300-2000 feet. Based on the cell analysis and test results a detailed design analysis will be prepared for a complete battery in the range of 160 to 260 Watt hours. From the test results and design analysis recommendations will be made for development of the optimum battery system.
