Research abstract

Enhanced ballistic performance and lethality of warheads is materials limited. High density materials with high flow strength, strain to failure ductility, texture, and lethal energy release as well as with nono-structure are desirable. The refractory metals as a class meet many of these requirements but are difficult to produce in the desired microstructure and in layers which is a desirable configuration for optimum warhead performance. A novel plasma process has demonstrated the refractory metals can be produced with amorphorous to nanostructures, in multilayers with energetic surface layers in sizes upto two feet at virtually any thickness. This plasma system will be utilized to develop refractory metals identified in coordination with the Air Force with defined microstructures, characterized and delivered specimens including multilayer specimens to the Air Force.
