Research abstract
Boundless proposes to develop unique energy storage modules to be used in Electric and Hybrid-Electric vehicles for the Air Force. Boundless' innovative approach utilizes standardized battery modules with an advanced wireless communication device to replace typical wired battery management systems. This allows build-up of a broad range of EV/HEV systems while avoiding physically complex interfaces. Key features include: Short range magnetic communications which eliminate complex, unreliable and expensive wiring otherwise required to manage EV/HEV battery systems. Use of novel magnetic communications technology allows robust wireless control without increasing vehicle RF signature. Standardized module form factors and connections will enable rapid system integration while maximizing versatility. This includes incorporation of standards and technologies associated with the military's Common Core Power Production (C2P2). Hybrid approach to energy storage that combines high-power-density ultracapacitors with high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries to deliver module performance approaching USABC and DOE goals. A unique structure for the battery modules incorporating carbon fiber composites for improved thermal management and reductions in mass.
