Research abstract

In the ongoing Phase I of this SBIR project, QSI (along with subcontractor Pratt & Whitney) has been investigating the feasibility of developing and commercializing a comprehensive solution for Engine Health Management (EHM) design for advanced engines that enables Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), integrated design for testability, design for diagnostics, design for prognostics and that possesses the feedback potential of integrating the FMECA analysis with the maintenance design technology. In Phase II, QSI proposes to build on the Phase I findings and analysis requirements identified in Phase I to enhance the knowledge acquisition, modeling, analysis and optimization capabilities within the TEAMSr tool set, and to develop and demonstrate an EHM system, designed via the toolset, on historical and real-life data. The EHM system, designed based on functional failure modeling and optimized using data from the FMECA process and design-for-testability analysis, will provide real-time diagnosis and prognosis capabilities, along with interfaces to the ground support. QSI also plans to demonstrate the solution in a test-bed for validating new functions for potential incorporation in the fielded system. Phase III commercialization of the product is expected to lead to its integration in an actual aircraft with the continuing support from Pratt & Whitney.
