Research abstract

The U.S. Air Force requires lithium-ion batteries operating at the extremes of a thermal envelope that cannot be met with commercially available electrolyte technology. Based upon our Phase I results several novel electrolyte formulations were developed that were shown to enable Li-ion cell cycling at temperatures as low as -50°C to as high as 80°C with good capacity retention. During Phase II, the new electrolyte formulations will be demonstrated in spiral wound Li-ion cell hardware. The spiral wound cells will be subjected to cycling at various rates and temperatures, and will also be evaluated under conditions of abuse.
