Research abstract

As part of a Phase I SBIR, MetaMateria was able to make concentrated colloids of nano-yttria particles (<20 nm) at concentrations up to 20 wt%. Small pieces were fabricated from concentrated colloids using several techniques, including pressure filtration, modified slip casting and centrifugation, which were dried. In Phase II, the results of Phase I will be extended to include a thorough study of methods for preparation of colloids, consolidation into parts, drying, carbon removal, pre-sintering, and full densification. The project will utilize extensive characterization and processing facilities at Penn State University. Methods for drying, organic removal and densification with minimum grain growth will be developed, with the goal of fully dense discs or other shapes that have a sub-micron grain size and high IR transmission. Equipment and facilities will be established at MetaMateria to prepare IR transparent materials.
