Research abstract

Triton Systems responds to the US Air Force's need for innovative material technologies for advanced high specific strength polymer matrix composites (PMC) that would enable significant weight savings in Boost and Orbit Transfer Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) Case applications. Addition of nanoparticle reinforcements to the resin matrix is expected to improve composite properties such as interlaminar shear strength, compressive properties and high temperature operation. In this study Triton will use an innovative surface modification of nanoparticles for improved matrix/particle interface interactions, along with high shear mixing techniques to improve nanoparticle dispersion in resin matrices. Improved dispersion coupled with better adhesion between matrix/particle is expected to improve the performace of nanoparticle filled matrices. Development of improved composites will help achieve the goals for delivered and compressive strength for the MinuteMan III and Minuteman IV rocket casing.
