Research abstract
The primary means of de-icing steel or aluminum structures on ships today consists of physical removal of the ice by impact with sledgehammers and aluminum baseball bats. Due to the introduction of composite structures on Naval vessals, deicing methods are required that do not result in impact damage to the composite materials. In response to the need for a more advanced de-icing system for shipboard composite structures, the development of a "naturally" heated deicing fluid and a mechanized, lightweight and portable preparation and application device is proposed.
