Research abstract

We have established the feasibility of developing DSSS satcom modems operating at the desired data rates of 64-384 kbps (portable or vehicular) over geostationary satellites, and of being to reduce the cost of these modems via the use air interfaces that are derived from terrestrial 3G WCDMA standards. Our basic technical objectives in Phase II are to develop a hardware demonstration of the key elements of the digital baseband portion of a satcom modem using WCDMA or CDMA2000 variants, as described in Phase I. Since terrestrial WCDMA and CDMA2000 clearly work and provide high rate terrestrial mobile communications, the foxus of our demonstration efforts will be to show, via hardware, that a modified version will be able to provide the same high data rates over a military geostationary satellite system. Since the RF subsystem will be the same as it is for voice and low data rate modems used in the MILSATCOm environment, we will spend most of the effort on the baseband portion, and account for the RF only to the extent necessary to model the RF impairment effects.
