Research abstract
This Phase II program will develop operational hardware that will demonstrate the ability for a low-cost, small form factor electro-optical system to detect missile targets using a new generation of high-speed "biologically inspired" imaging devices and spectroscopic sensing. Nova's "Variable Acuity Superpixel Imaging" (VASI) devices have demonstrated the ability to produce high spatial resolution detection performance with high frame rates and wide fields of view. Using potassium doublet atomic spectral detection, the proposed camera system will begin collecting high-speed image data that will be processed in real-time using motion disparity processing to perform a background rejection operation. We believe that this prototype system will show the feasibility of using low-cost visible and infrared imaging technologies that will enable a new generation of missile detection systems.
