Research abstract

Toyon proposes to develop a feature-aided dynamic sensor tasking (FA-DST) algorithm and a tracked object manager (TOM) that form the backbone of a system for the continuous tracking and, if appropriate, identification of high-value targets. The FA-DST algorithm collects target feature measurements at the appropriate time and aspect such that the fusion and tracking system can both avoid misassociating measurements to tracks (thus avoid track switches) and correct track switches when the algorithm fails to prevent them due, perhaps, to the unavailability of features at the appropriate aspect. The domain of sensor tasks includes different radar modes and waveforms so that the feature database and the fusion and tracking module may best be serviced for different values of the expected signal-to-interference ratio, resolution, background traffic, vehicle classification and radar cross-section. The other module to be developed is the TOM. The TOM comprises several algorithms which model and propagate the uncertainty in associating vehicles to tracks, build and maintain a database of features that uniquely characterize each tracked object, and process received features to resolve potential track switches and breaks. We will implement the FA-DST and TOM algorithms into the SLAMEMT simulation and evaluate their performance as well as utility.
