Research abstract

Adaptive Materials intends to leverage its Phase I design work and previous microtubule SOFC development success to develop and demonstrate a soldier portable 150 watt SOFC system with a minimum specific energy of 1,500 Whr/kg. We believe the solid oxide fuel cell technology recently demonstrated by Adaptive Materials offers a potential 21st century power source solution. Our miniature solid oxide fuel cell technology is an ultra light weight, compact, and robust fuel cell capable of running on high energy density hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are the highest energy density fuels available, and the use of solid oxide fuel cell technology offers the best opportunity to harvest the largest fraction of the stored energy. Our fuel cell is immune to thermal and mechanical shocks and it incorporates multiple redundancies for battlefield reliability. Adaptive Materials intends to develop and demonstrate an affordable, supportable, adaptable and highly mobile 150 watt SOFC power system for high power consumption military devices. The deliverable at the end of the program will be the demonstration of a liquid hydrocarbon powered solid oxide fuel cell with a minimum 1,500 Whr/kg.
