Research abstract

In Phase I of this SBIR program, Integrated Sensors Inc. developed and demonstrated techniques that yielded practical, operationally meaningful, simultaneous mainlobe/sidelobe jamming cancellation for existing radars while preserving target angular accuracy. The primary emphasis of this effort was to investigate practical interference suppression techniques for use in existing radars against current and projected interference sources, analyze and quantify detection and target angular accuracy, and demonstrate projected performance. Three associated architectures were examined: (1) a conventional two-step approach (2) a Sum-Difference architecture and (3) a multi-channel (subarray) architecture. The results demonstrated that a multi-channel architecture was superior in many ways. In this Phase II effort, we shall extend our efforts in many areas, including: (1) auxiliary channels for sidelobe cancellation, (2) sub-banded input handling, (3) advanced beam-steering / tracking approach, and (4) a potentially more accurate numerical optimization technique. Our demonstration plan will utilize an experimental phased array system with the assistance of Lockheed-Martin Corporation. These will eventually lead to implementation of jamming suppression processors for advanced software-only upgrades to existing Navy radars
