Research abstract

The cost of manufacturing integrally bladed rotors for large gas turbine engines is high driven by the cost of raw material, rough machining, and airfoil machining. This project will address these cost drivers by identifying methods to reduce forging weight through aggressive near-net shape forging methods, exploiting the use of fine-grain processing to improve forgeability, and demonstrate enhancements to electrochemical machining of airfoils to eliminate hand finishing operations. These improvements will be applicable to large and small engine IBRs.
