Research abstract
The rapid development of the telecommunications industry over the last decade has led to significant advances in several technologies. Two of these technologies, wireless networking chipsets and laser miniaturization, have made it possible to create a device for wirelessly monitoring neuronal activity. In this project, we proposed to utilize these technologies to create a wireless functional brain imaging system with applications in the cognitive neuroscience, brain-machine interface, and medical fields. In the first phase of this project, we designed and began building a two cell wireless continuous wave functional near-infrared brain imaging system. In Phase II, we propose to extend this technology, as a first potential product, to cerebral oxygenation status monitoring for military aircrews. Additionally, we will transition the technology to a university partner to validate and incorporate into a closed loop cognitive monitoring and reaction system.
