Research abstract
The purpose of this project is to perform system analysis, system design and system test of an UltraWideband (UWB) mono-, bi- and multi-static radar surveillance system. Dismounts moving though the system would be detected, their location determined, their motion tracked, and alarms generated. Because of its LPI/LPD qualities, a UWB system would also be covert. Such a system is important because it allows unattended surveillance of areas or perimeters in rural, urban or MOUT environments. For military users, this system provides increased situational awareness and an increased ability to deny areas to opponents. For commercial users this would mean a new way to safeguard reservoirs, aircraft, airports, nuclear plants and other targets. The feasibility of this project has been demonstrated through several programs including this SBIR and DARPA's MicroThunder project. Our technical approach is to perform rigorous requirements definition, system analysis and system design leading to the objective system. Programmatically, this project is tightly coupled with the MicroThunder project. This coupling is synergistic and well coordinated. At a Critical Design Review (CDR), Time Domain and BBN (MicroThunder prime contractor) will present a clear technical path towards implementation of a lightweight (<50grams), long endurance (300 days), bi-static radar system.
