Research abstract

Ultra broadband and spatially coherent laser sources are desired for a variety of commercial and military applications. Currently available laser sources generate output powers and spectral widths that are too low for many of these applications. In this Phase II, Aculight proposes a novel all-fiber laser source capable of generating continuous-wave ultra broadband radiation. The all-fiber approach used to construct the laser results in a highly efficient, reliable, and compact device. The Phase I experiments demonstrated the feasibility of generating broad bandwidth from a diode bar in a spatially dispersive cavity. However, the bandwidth of this device is limited to the gain bandwidth supported by the diode bar. In this Phase II, an all-fiber approach is proposed that is capable of generating much broader bandwidths. The laser source will be constructed and characterized for suitability as a broadband source for future DOD applications.
