Research abstract
The objective of this proposal is to reduce both the resonant and forced response and achieve reduced noise and vibration operation in electrical machine stator and rotor core structures. We will develop, test and validate a high-damping polymer resin to replace the materials currently used to impregnate motor core structures. The project will prove that electrical components can be impregnated with a high damping insulating resin to mitigate noise and vibration problems. Quiet Solution ("QS") will formulate a high-performance resin (a viscoelastic polymer) that will provide high damping characteristics and maintain dielectric requirements for applications in electrical components. QS will demonstrate a novel compatible blend of polybutadiene and epoxy resins having both damping characteristics and acceptable electrical, environmental, and physical performance. The low viscosity of the resin will make integration with the existing Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) motor manufacturing technology easily feasible. QS (and predecessor company) has been shipping viscoelastic polymer technologies for 11 years and its core product has been thoroughly tested.
