Research abstract

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) has been in pursuit of developing laser-based weaponry in defense against hostile ballistic missiles, aircraft, and other targets of high threat since the 1970s. However, there is a lack of research and development in the areas of miniaturization to both chemical and power solid state lasers systems for man-portable applications. There is a tremendous need in man-portable direct reaction weapons that can provide SOF with the necessary firepower needed in their clandestine operations. Most often, due to weight constraints, SOF weaponry are limited to light machine guns and assault riffles, this greatly reduces their effectiveness in carrying out their missions and making them venerable to enemy engagements when discovered. Stellar Photonics propose two innovative Compact Laser Cannons (Solid State & Chemical); bringing the power of Star Wars technology to the field, providing the needed heavy punch capability to the SOF at a relative low cost.
