Research abstract
Advanced seeker systems for endo- and exo-atmospheric applications will utilize infrared signature of ballistic threats in addition to ranging information, visible and Near IR spectral bands for improved identification and tracking. This future capability requires diffraction limited visible performance for the optical system while still maintaining the low cost production capability of snap together assembly. Presently, optical instruments for seekers utilize Be optics for lightweight IR performance; however, these systems have limited use for future active/passive seekers because of the unstable performance of Be at visible quality levels and the incompatibility of the optical designs for use with a LADAR. SSG proposes to build a highly innovative design using of a low cost, thermally stable visible telescope system based on two key enabling technologies; (1) a SiC based telescope system providing very lightweight and stiff construction; inherent athermal operation over wide temperature ranges; superior thermal stability; and a very low cost, near net shape castable fabrication technique compatible with high rate production; (2) novel mirror fabrication process that maintains control of optical parameters relative to mechanical fiducials to permit minimal post assembly alignment.
