Research abstract

Hood Technology Corporation (Hood Tech) was founded in Hood River, OR, in 1993 by Dr. Andy von Flotow and with the team Dr. von Flotow has assembled continues to be a worldwide leader in providing EO / IR systems to strict customer requirements in a rapid manner. Hood Tech has designed, manufactured, and delivered over 10,000 gimbaled EO, IR, and EO/IR imagers. These delivered systems have accrued an estimated 1.5 million flight hours in theater on major U.S. DOD platforms, including the Boeing Insitu ScanEagle and U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corps RQ-21 Blackjack.During its long history of success, Hood Tech has established itself as a global leader in the production of lightweight, high performance EO/IR gimbals. This time in market has allowed Hood Tech to develop a multitude of proprietary lightweight gimbal design techniques. These techniques result in Hood Tech’s products often achieving the lightest weight in the market for their performance. Hood Tech remains entirely family owned and operated, allowing the company to respond to end-user feedback with a level of agility that is unparalleled in the industry. Hood Tech in its proposed solution intends to leverage upon its novel Raptor Pod design to bring forth a novel solution in a rapid manner to the Air Force SBIR Solicitation AF251-Do18 AgilePod16V2 - Compatible Optical Nose End-cone and High-Resolution EO/IR. Hood Tech and its strategic technical partner Communications & Power Industries LLC (CPI) intends to leverage past experience, current products and best practices to reduce risk in the execution of this effort. Hood Tech will design and develop an AgilePod16V2 (AP16V2) compatible optical end cone and integrate a high resolution Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) sensor capable of detecting, tracking, and identifying targets with a National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS) value of 5 or higher for EOW and 8 or higher for EON at the specified ranges.Hood Tech in its execution of its daily business in the commercial markets fully integrates Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) sensors to non-traditional platforms which then enables non-traditional ISR to be supported by various fixed, rotary and unmanned platforms. Hood Tech will leverage its design expertise and commercial Intellectual Property (IP) that is found in its Raptor Pod system to design and fully integrate an EO/IR solution for the end cone mounted sensor of an AgilePod16v2. By leveraging the Hood Tech Raptor Pod, a high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 8 and 9 can be achieved including fulfilling any commercial off the shelf (COTS) requirements.
