Research abstract
The Ocular Scanning Instrumentation (OSI) will provide the warfighter with an unobtrusive, portable triage tool for the automated and non-invasive diagnosis of physiological insults via ocular biomarkers, closing the gap in combat casualty care. Specific functions with heightened value include applications as a (1) sentinel animal screening tool to assess potential hazards on the battlefield prior to troop contact, (2) warfighter screening in littoral settings to assess possible on-land exposure prior to re-boarding, (3) special unit diagnostic device for isolated groups, and (4) diagnostic device for emergency response teams and other first responder units. By removing the need for technical expertise through automation, OSI will provide rapid casualty assessment in the theater of operation/at the site of extreme events, thus allowing efficient treatment of those in need. As a consequence, emergency operations centers may more rapidly implement proper strategies, procedures, and protocols consistent with the goals set forth by TOPOFF 2 for weapons of mass destruction response efforts. The integration of ScenPro's TacMedCS technology will both enhance the diagnostic capabilities of the combined technology in battlefield settings and result in an automated, field-deployable device that will provide for remote awareness of potential medical needs within the theater of operation.
