Research abstract

We live in a 3-D world and naturally interact with 3D objects, yet we are still relying on a 2D display to visualize 3-D electronic data at information age. Although the volumetric display by crossbeam upconversion fluorescence is superior in principle compared to competing technologies, it is currently limited by the choice of heavy, expensive and faint upconversion glasses as display media. Slow commercial available laser scanners also limit the volume and resolution of the crossbeam volumetric display. In this project LS Technologies (LST) strives to develop a commercially viable volumetric display, by developing and applying highly efficient upconverting molecules and materials. LST will also develop innovative optical scanning technique that significantly increases the bandwidth and the size of volumetric display. With the feasibility of the new display media demonstrated in Phase I, LST is en-route to develop a volumetric display prototype without moving parts. It is bright, scalable to large volume, low weight and low cost, by the end of Phase II. A true 3-D volumetric image can be created at ambient light for every viewing angle with the prototype. A full color volumetric video monitor for motion pictures can be further developed based on Phase II research.
