Research abstract

The goal of this Phase II effort is to design, build, test, and deliver a prototype two-band remote infrared thermographer capable of accurate skin temperature measurements at large standoffs. This system incorporates the color temperature measurement technique that was validated in the Phase I work based on the difference between the integrated radiance of two adjacent IR spectral channels. The two IR channels are critically chosen to minimize the impact of varying humidity levels; the Phase II will also utilize a normalized difference signal which minimizes the attenuating effects of rain, fog, and snow. This system will employ a modified commercial 16" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and two uncooled microbolometer focal plane arrays to provide the two thermal IR images form which the target temperature is extracted. The Phase II will also produce a GUI which is used to view the scene, select the region of interest, and control other operating parameters. Performance projections are a target temperature accuracy of ±1.5ºC at a 15Hz measurement bandwidth with a 12cm spatial resolution at a 1km standoff. This system will also include an on-axis compact VIS/NIR wide field imager whose output will be fused to the IR image and presented by the GUI.
