Research abstract

Most lightning-caused wildfires are ignited by continuing current lightning. The National Lightning Detection Network is currently unable to distinguish between continuing current and conventional lightning events. The purpose of this project will be to design a prototype that can determine the magnitude of the current in order to set a threshold for events strong enough to be a fire hazard. The determing of the continuing current lightning with new technology will enable year-round identification of lightning events likely to cause a fire.
