Research abstract
Not Available Six years ago, a low Earth orbit (LEO) demonstration for autonomous rendezvous and docking (ARD) was developed that provided a near-term option for validating many of the enabling technologies and concepts required for satellite re-supply and servicing. Flight hardware currently exists in the form of a target spacecraft payload intended for a small satellite. The hardware includes a docking mechanism, sensor targets, avionics, gas and payload re-supply interfaces for the target spacecraft, as well as a prototype of the docking system for the chaser spacecraft. The on-orbit demonstration was intended to validate that technology existed for performing autonomous rendezvous and docking that could lead to propellant re-supply for satellites, fluid/gas re-supply for orbiting laboratories, and payload exchange for satellites or servicing missions. The existing hardware and mission planning results will be described in this proposal. Because of the work performed on this previous ARD mission, many of the Phase I tasks have already been addressed. Phase I would be used to upgrade our system design and engineering drawings to incorporate improvements in technology that have taken place over the past six years as well as update the docking scenario, mission planning and analysis, and performance estimates to reflect these technology improvements.
