Research abstract
Not Available Food for Thought Software is dedicated to creating tools that promote the use of chess as an educational activity in K- 12 schools. We recently introduced the Think Like A King_ School Chess Software System, designed specifically to help schools overcome the barriers to establishing their own successful chess programs. Already in use by schools throughout the country, in addition to its focus on chess, our system also provides an innovative educational model whereby courseware is used as the primary curriculum for a complex subject to overcome a shortage of qualified teachers, and inexpensive "digital textbooks" are optionally used to link learning between home and school. Having already developed software to make chess work within schools, we now plan to create software that will make chess competition possible between schools. We propose to create the first Internet Scholastic Chess League, establishing a practical and convenient competitive structure that will make it possible for chess to become a standard "school sport" in virtually any K-12 school, thereby enhancing its already valuable role in education. Although useful in any school setting, this may have particular impact in at-risk populations.
