Research abstract

72345S03-I Among the various methods to selectively produce single enantiomer products, asymmetric catalysis is the most attractive. Homogeneous metal complexes with chiral ligands are currently the most widely used and versatile asymmetric catalysts. However, catalysts that are not soluble in the same phase as the products or reactants have the inherent advantage of ease of separation and handling. Therefore, this project will develop ¿heterogeneous¿ asymmetric catalysts, namely, insoluble cross-linked polysiloxane transition-metal complex copolymer catalysts that can be readily separated from product mixtures and reused. Phase I will consist of the preparation, testing, and development of new phosphorus ligands, metal complexes, and cross-linked polysiloxane transition-metal complex copolymer asymmetric catalysts. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: A catalyst system for asymmetric hydroformylation could be used to provide chiral aldehydes, which, in turn, could be used as precursors to optically active pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other specialty and fine chemicals.
