Research abstract
Although many people with disabilities enjoy visiting outdoor parks and recreational areas, there is currently no easy means for them to obtain information about the accessibility of outdoor trails in these areas. This project will develop a Trails Web site providing universal access information for trails throughout the U.S., which will be useful to all hikers, regardless of their ability. The Universal Trail Assessment Process enables trail managers to objectively assess specific trails with regard to grade, cross slope, width, surface characteristics and obstacles. The collected trail data is processed to create Trail Access Information in a format similar to a Nutrition Facts food label. The objectives of Phase I are to develop the Web site and trail access information database, collect and enter trail access information, and evaluate its effectiveness through on-line evaluations. The Web site will allow users to search for trails that meet their specific access needs. The site will also contain links to other Web sites with related information, such as a state park. Trail access information obtained remotely will allow Web site users to plan appropriate outdoor travel by being able to determine in advance where they can hike. Key Words: trail, hiking, access, accessibility, Internet, Web site, search, database
