Research abstract

60563 This project will develop a low-cost, accurate, remote monitor for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from terrestrial sources, utilizing a novel type of solid electrolyte sensor. The proposed carbon dioxide detector will enable expanded monitoring of carbon dioxide levels to enhance DOE studies on carbon cycle processes. Phase I demonstrated the feasibility of using a common low-cost manufacturing process to produce a novel type of solid electrolyte sensor for the detection of CO2. The sensor response to carbon dioxide was characterized in the laboratory and responded very well. Phase II will optimize the sensor and fabrication method developed in Phase I, package the sensor, develop instrumentation to control the sensor, provide a standard output in response to gas, and characterize prototype detectors under laboratory and field conditions. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The sensor should have application in a range of commercial markets including industrial health and safety, indoor air quality monitoring, environmental engineering, and industrial process control. There is no low-cost, reliable, power CO2 sensor available to meet the needs of these applications
