Research abstract

Solid state batteries offer potentially greater energy density than conventional nickel cadmium batteries and, when perfected, will lower satellite launch costs and increase satellite lifetimes. Unfortunately, persistent problems with electrolyte conductivity and stability have limited the development of these devices. The proposed research seeks to demonstrate a new electropolymerizable solid polymer electrolyte with improved chemical stability and ionic conductivity. This effort will entail the synthesis and testing of novel polymer electrolytes and comparison of their performance with conventional polymer electrolytes.
