Research abstract

ChemMotif will develop, characterize and evaluate several colorimetric vapor sensors for application as end-of-service-life indicators for carbon-filter gas masks in Chemical and Biological Defense applications. These sensors include two general organicvapor sensors, one of which is sensitive to non-polar organics and the other to polar organics. A third sensor is designed to respond to acid gases, including organophosphorus nerve agents. In combination, these sensors will permit safer and morecost-effective use of gas-mask carbon filters. Low-cost End-of-Service-Life Indicators for chemical protective gear will provideassurance to chemical emergency response teams, including firefighters, lawenforcement personnel, industrial workers, and environmental remediation personnelthat their protective clothing is in working order on removal from storage andduring use. This technology may also be applicable to organic vapor detection inindustrial and environmental applications such as waste site assessment.
