Research abstract

We propose to develop a family of star and tree coupler systems that are modular. Each coupler system will include three modules: a fiber/cable input module, a routing module and a fiber/cable output module. The input and output modules will secure the strength means in the input and output fiber ribbon cables and each will use an MFP to position and support the individual optical fibers. These modules will provide separable connections to the routing module. The routing module will use planar waveguides to create the paths required for the star or tree coupling. Specifically, designs will be proposed for tree couplers with 1x2, 1x3, 1x4 and star couplers with 2x2, 4x4, 8x8 ports. We intend to use etched silicon micromachined components for the multi-fiber positioners, MFPs, which will position the optical waveguides. We intend to employ the "floating contact" concept to allow for realistic tolerances on the packaging components. This "floating contact" will be single-sided to provide environmental and handling benefits. We intend to offer two design versions: a metal version for greater temperature range capability and a polymeric design composite version for lower cost. These designs will have the capability to connect with a planar waveguide structure fabricated using thermally grown silica or ion diffused waveguide technologies. The designs will feature "progressive alignment" for the connector aspect of this coupler system; it will use defined "critical surfaces" on the multi-fiber positioner for final and most critical waveguide alignment.
