Research abstract

The Navy is rapidly transitioning to the electronic presentation of maintenance documentation (IETMs), combined with advances in automated machine diagnostics. The overall technical objective for Phase I was to demonstrate the feasibility of using a singlesource of IETM data to effectively support maintenance aiding and maintenance training. In order to become experts, maintenance technicians need procedural knowledge (what to do) and device knowledge (why to do it). Goals form the bridge between these twotypes of knowledge. For aiding, IETM content is coupled with on-line diagnostic algorithms and monitoring systems, and maintainer interaction with technical data is guided by best-practice and pre-defined diagnostic sequences. For training, the same IETMdata is coupled with proven interactive instructional technologies. The primary bridge between on-the-job aiding and exploratory learning is the transfer of information from an aiding system (TEAMATE/ADAPTS) about the procedures followed by the technicianto the training system (DIAG) where the technician has the opportunity to explore the underlying knowledge behind the procedures just carried out. In Phase I, the team demonstrated basic interoperability capabilities required to implement this integratedIETM-based aiding/training concept. Any large military or commercial organization responsible for maintaining and servicing a variety of complex equipment is investigating ways to use electronic media, automated fault detection, and Condition BasedMaintenance to maintain performance and contain costs. An effective integrated aiding and training system for fault diagnosis will improve the timeliness and accuracy of on-the-job isolation and repair of faults as well as the maintenance technician?sunderlying knowledge of the system.
