Research abstract
Not Available Triton Systems Inc. proposes to develop a new unique rigid wall expeditionary shelter based on an innovative continuous manufacturing process initiative that was invented by Triton for the automotive industry for rapid production of structural flooring. Triton's high performance laminated composite panels are made from inexpensive post consumer recycled material in a low cost, high volume continuous manufacturing process. The proposed tactical shelter system would meet the Navy's need for environmentally friendly and durable materials that reduce deployment and life cycle costs through reduced weight, increased service life and a commercially valuable recycled material or energy product at the end of service life. These thermoplastic composite shelters will outperform, and will have lower total life cycle cost than wood, fiberboard or steel based products due to there inherent mechanical properties and superior resistance to environmental deterioration. The proposed innovative continuous processing will allow for the production of curved or shaped panels, and by consolidation and forming the edges insitu, will afford integrated panel attachment and assembly systems without reworking or significant hand labor, thus reducing total shelter cost. The incorporation of integrated attachment and assembly hardware will allow for deployment without the use of fasteners and will provide for easy disposal and recycling at the end of service life. In Phase I we will demonstrate the thermoplastic processing and superior mechanical and environmental performance. The Phase I option will be devoted to developing interlocking panel edge systems leading to preproduction development and qualification of full size shelters in phase II.
