Research abstract

A radical new approach to adaptive antenna processing, based on the emerging theory of per Survivor Processing (PSP), is proposed to enhance performance of cellular systems. This approach offers the opportunity to achieve large performance improvements (e.g. improved acquisition., and/or interference rejection) over conventional adaptive antenna array techniques when a large number of users difficult dynamics and/or channel uncertainty are present. Orders of magnitude in performance are expected. PSP is now becoming feasible due to the rapidly increasing computational power and decreasing price of modern digital technology. The PSP adaptive algorithms will be developed and simulated to verify these performance gains in dense urban environments with mobile users, multipath and co-channel interference. Both the CDMA and TDMA digital cellular standards will be addressed. Comparisons will be made to conventional adaptive array approaches as well as cellular performance without adaptive antenna processing. A high level design will then be derived to validate the tractability of the approach as well as provide size, power, and cost estimates.
