Research abstract

M-Dot, Inc. ("M-DOT") proposes to design, fabricate and test a thrust augumentation system for low cost expendable turbojet engines. The system will be designed for application on the Sunstrand TJ-90 engine and will utilize existing and proven technologies. The system will consist of the following: 1. Sudden expansion burner for exhaust re-heat. 2. System for water/methanol injection at the compressor inlet and combustor inlet of the engine. The Phase I program would accomplish the following: 1. Design and construction of a water cooled sudden expansion afterburner. 2. Design and construction of a two point water/methanol injection system. 3. Performance testing of the above systems on a turbocharger based gas turbine power plant. 4. Design and construction of a thin walled ablative lined afterburner. 5. Durability testing of the above on a turbocharger based gas turbine power plant. All design and fabrication work will be accomplished at the M-DOT facility in Phoenix. Testing will be accomplished on an M-DOT owned gas turbine power plant.
