Research abstract
Not Available Distributed microsensor networks, built from collections of nodes each having the ability to sense their environment, process the raw sensor data in cooperation with other neighboring nodes into information and then communicate that information to end users. Microsensor networks are an example of autonomous wireless local area networks (AWLANs). These networks are designed to be self-organizing in the sense of establishing and maintaining their own network without the aid of any established infrastructure or centralized administration. The mobile computing devices in a tactical AWLAN are generally resource constrained in terms of processing power and battery life and must be built to stringent size, weight, and power specifications. AWLANs, especially microsensor networks, may be required to function in extremely hostile environments. This project will develop a multipolicy approach to information assurance for AWLANs. Multiple quality of protection profiles will be developed and ranked according to resource utilization and the desired level of security and fault tolerance. Different types of data will be ranked according to its sensitivity, importance, timeliness and priority. These profiles and types will be used to optimize the assignment of information assurance resources so that resource utilization is commensurate with the data ranking. BENEFITS: Military: new capabilities for battlefield situational awareness, providing seismic, acoustic, magnetic, and imaging tactical information to identify threats and intrusions. Civilian: low cost sensor networks enable health, safety, and environmental monitoring, transportation, systems control, and new manufacturing information technology.
