Research abstract

Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays offer many advantages over cathode ray tube (CRT) displays and liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Like LCDs, OLED displays are thin and lightweight. However, unlike LCDs, OLED displays offer improved viewingangles, have greater brightness, and promise greater power efficiencies. Nevertheless, there are still major technical obstacles that remain before full color OLED displays are commercially viable including issues relating to lifetime, color quality, andefficiency. Maxdem proposes to develop new polymeric fluorophors for Polymer OLED (p-OLED) applications that will surpass existing OLED polymers in color quality, brightness, efficiency, and lifetime. The new proprietary materials will be based onpolyphenylene polymers and co-polymers. Polyphenylenes have relatively large band-gaps and emit in the blue part of the visible spectrum, making them well suited for blue fluorophors or matrices for red and green emitters. Maxdem has developed specialexpertise in polyphenylene and conjugated polymer chemistry that will be directly applicable to the proposed project.
