Research abstract
The miniaturization of the laser diode, power switches (MCT, IGBT, etc.), the drastic increase in the number density of transistors on a monolithic chip and the capability to drive these chips at very high power ratings and clock speeds has increased the demand for the devices. However, such high performance can be extracted only over short time pulses because the devices produce a moderate amount of heat at extremely high heat fluxes. The bottleneck towards running steadily at peak conditions is that the heat generation is too high to be dissipated by currently used heat sinks (conduction heat sinks with or without fans). Hence, there is a need to develop a compact high heat flux cooler. A key problem is that this cooler must be very compact so that it does not impact the over all size of the solid-state system. Cudo proposes a highly innovative integral pump/motor/heat exchanger that elegantly solves this problem. This revolutionary design has resulted in the submission of two patents. Never before has a pump, motor and heat exchanger been integrated into a single stand-alone unit. This pump-motor-heat exchanger integration will reduce the size of the cooler by more than 6 times, thus, reducing costs and increasing portability and marketability significantly. The objective of this study is to design, fabricate, test and deliver a market-ready prototype of the high heat-flux cooler which integrates the functions of motor, pump, cooler and heat exchanger info a miniature, compact stand-alone package.
